The rapid striking and breaking of the electric arc inject massive quantities of 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics back into the high-voltage grid. An internal series reactor provides the inductive reactance necessary to stabilize the arc during the initial scrap melting phase when the arc path is highly volatile. In our design without an excitation tap changer, the reactor can be automatically switched into or out of the circuit via the tap changer. Choosing an integrated internal reactor saves substantial substation floor space and simplifies heavy busbar layouts, whereas an external reactor offers easier independent maintenance but requires a larger equipment footprint.
